Economic development and political development go hand in hand. Either the egg comes first or the chicken: economic development has often been preceded by political development and often followed by it. Many have taken a similar path to development, where economic prosperity fueled citizens’ demand for enhanced protection of their political rights and wealth, which eventually led to a promotion of democracy. Korea is no exception in this regard, with economic development leading to political development, furthering the maturation of its economy.
