Abstract

Dr. Daniel Schrag, Sturgis Hooper Professor of Geology at Harvard University, says climate change is driving extreme weather events, including a heat dome currently affecting 100 million people across the U.S. During a conversation with Dr. Kaye, Schrag explains global temperatures have risen triggering rapid sea level rise and widespread environmental changes. Oceans are getting warmer, and melting ice sheets could cause sea levels to rise by 5 to 10 millimeters per year. While he says climate change can’t be reversed, Schrag emphasizes that a transition to clean energy could limit future damage. He also notes recent layoffs of climate scientists as a major setback in addressing the crisis and calls for stronger climate policies. Schrag urges communities to prepare for extreme weather and take individual steps to stay safe.
