Abstract

This chapter explores the ethical dimensions of utilizing finance research tools in light of big data and machine learning advancements. It emphasizes the societal impact and values engagement, urging consideration in teaching and application. It raises critical questions on tool usage, client interests, discriminatory practices, transparency, societal impacts, and the sustainability of financial practices. The chapter underscores concerns about wealth inequality, discriminatory algorithms, privacy violations, and the commodification of data. It calls for a reevaluation of financial methodologies to address societal needs and mitigate risks, advocating for more socially responsible capital allocation and the strengthening of informational value in asset pricing.
