Virtually all human beings live in the midst of, vulnerable to, and often grateful for the company and practical utility of the many different “publics” that exist. They are citizens of polities; participants in cultural traditions; members of social, civic, philanthropic, or recreational associations; active agents in economic markets as investors, inventors, entrepreneurs, employees, consumers; neighbors who share common spaces; acquaintances, friends, and family to whom we are bound by feelings of affection and duty; and strangers who we encounter in our daily lives as we hear about them, and witness their behavior and condition through various forms of communications, encounters, and transactions. The publics among whom we live have a material reality. They can materially help or hurt us through their actions as we pursue our own individual lives.
